Standing Ovation

Ladies and gentleman, Barry Bonds (above) is your new home run king. But with the way A-Rod is rolling Barry won’t hold it for very long, so I say let him enjoy it while he can. The truth will come out eventually. Maybe it already has, and maybe he’s innocent. We don’t know. Only he, his childhood buddy and maybe a few teammates know the real story.

I will always remember where I was when he hit #756…in the John at PGE Park. I heard it announced through the radio broadcast being played in the men’s room. I raced back to the suite to watch the post-HR festivities on TV. I thought Henry “Hank” Aaron’s message was a beautiful touch. As a huge fan of the game I’m only dissappointed in the way it was covered, and the dark cloud that hasn’t burnt off.

But another reason why I’ll remember August 7, 2007 is because Rick Ankiel was introduced back into my life. After a humiliating stint in the majors, the one-time rookie sensation St. Louis Cardinals pitcher is now a slugging right-fielder for their Triple-A club. Ankiel hit a game-winning three-run homer for the Redbirds to put his offensive season totals at something like 32 HR and 89 RBI! Mark my words: Rick Ankiel will be back, maybe not on the mound, but definitely on a major league field. And when he returns, I will give him a standing ovation.
